On the Rooftop

25 May

While it was dark in the world (because it was nighttime) Nicodemus was seeking light for his soul.  He met Jesus on a rooftop.  Perhaps he didn’t want his fellow Pharisees to know that he was seeking truth from Jesus.  The details of this encounter are contained in chapter 3 of the Gospel of John in the Bible.

There are several truths about faith to be gained from this encounter. First, Nicodemus calls Jesus, “Rabbi”. Isn’t it interesting that a “ruler of the Jews” should seek out instruction on matters of faith?  And yet, before Nicodemus can ask any questions, Jesus speaks to the heart of Nicodemus and says, “… unless someone is born again he can not see the Kingdom of God”.

Much to his credit, Nicodemus does not take offense to this statement, but he continues to seek understanding.  “How can one be born again …?” he asks. And Jesus replies that one must be born “by water and the Spirit”

Nicodemus will continue to ask questions, seeking truth from Jesus.  This may be a good time for us to consider what we are seeking. If we seek the things of this world, material pleasure and satisfaction, then birth by water may be enough.  But if we seek something deeper, the Kingdom of God, an experience of God’s presence and power here and now, then we need something more.  We must seek spiritual rebirth, a heart focused and reliant on a relationship with our risen Savior.
