Standing Up!

05 Jun

Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, “Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?” — John 7:50-51

Here is the second account of Nicodemus, as recorded in the Gospel of John.  The one who first met with Jesus under cover of darkness on a rooftop is now standing up publicly to insure that Jesus receives due process.  Nicodemus’ own people, the Pharisees, are ready to condemn Jesus without giving him the chance to explain himself.

Nicodemus could easily sit back and allow the proceedings to go on.  The tide of public opinion, among the religious leaders, has turned against Jesus and is gaining momentum.  As a Pharisee, Nicodemus has no reason to intervene.  However, that first encounter with Jesus must have had a lasting impression on Nicodemus.

At great risk to his own reputation and place among the Pharisees, Nicodemus stands to remind them of their process.  Condemnation of a person or their actions can not happen until we hear from the one who is to be condemned.

We do not have any details of how this meeting of the Pharisees ends. However, we do know that Nicodemus receives ridicule and chastisement from his colleagues.  It is significant that Nicodemus, who came to Jesus with questions of his own, now creates room for Jesus to present his teaching and defend his actions in front of the Pharisees.

The relationship between Jesus and Nicodemus has deepened.  This gives us an opportunity to consider our own faith.  Have we begun the journey by taking our questions and doubts to God?  Be assured, he is ready to listen and be in conversation with us.  Once our faith grows, we will have opportunities to create space where others can hear and experience God’s love in Jesus.  Let us be open to such opportunities as our relationship with Jesus deepens.
