1 Peter 2:2 NIV
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
The problem is, we are not new born babies and therefore our cravings are for other sources of refreshment. A baby’s only choice for nourishment is milk. When children grow up they discover that there are other options for quenching their thirst. When given a choice, my children will often ask for juice, chocolate milk or even soda. Pure milk would not often make the list of desired beverages.
While I may be critical of my children’s beverages choices, I am reminded to consider the sources of nourishment that I choose for my mind. Given the option, many of us might choose time in front of the television or video games rather than reading our Bibles. We might spend time reading good fiction, rather than drinking in God’s Word.
This passage encourages us to choose nourishment that is pure and spiritual. When considering television, the internet and radio there is a whole lot that doesn’t fit the category. We should all be selective about what we watch, what we listen to and where we visit on the internet. Like babies, we grow up and disvover that we have many choices and so our cravings may lead us toward less nourishing sources of refreshment.
The Bible should be our first source of spiritual nourishment. It will provide us the purest source available. However, there are many devotional books, Christian radio stations and faith based websites which can aid our spiritual growth when added to regular Bible reading. These alternatives should never replace daily reading of God’s Word.
Thanks to our parent’s influence many of us have been taught to drink soda in moderation and to choose healthier beverages like juice and water, in addition to milk, on a regular basis. We should look to our Pastors and fellow Christians to give us guidance on selecting appropriate beverages for our spiritual growth too.
