1 Peter 5:2 NIV
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;
A shepherd? Really? Is that something I should aspire to be? They spend a lot of time alone. . . with sheep. There isn’t much recognition for being good at shepherding. Not much hope for institutional advancement.
The world seems to motivate us toward positions of leadership where we can motivate and influence people. By the world’s standards we should seek jobs where good efforts are rewarded with pay raises and perks.
But God invites us to be shepherds. We are called to a position of servanthood, not authority. We are called to lead, not to rule. We are called to the task of protecting and providing for the sheep.
The world would be disappointed, but God will be pleased and honored when we accept the calling to be shepherds of His people. He will give us a flock to care for. He will give us wisdom and knowledge so we may provide for the flock. Lord, give me the heart of a servant so I may care for your people.
