Willingness to Serve

17 Aug

As part of my daily devotional routine I am currently reading through 1 Samuel. In chapter 17 Goliath the Philistine is taunting the Israelites and challenging them to send one man into battle against him. Rather than the armies fighting each other, this will be man against man. In the end, the nation represented by the loser will become servants of the winner’s nation.

It just so happens that during this time Jesse sends his son David to the army camp to gather a report on how the battle is going. David leaves his sheep in the care of another shepherd and assumes the task of delivering food supplies from his father to the Israelite army.

Upon reading the details of this familiar story I marveled at the idea that a routine task like delivering supplies could open the opportunity for a great victory! Obedience to his father’s instruction (to deliver supplies) puts David in exactly the right place where his faith could be put into action.

Arriving at the front, David learned of the challenge and accepted the fight NOT because he thought HE could win, but because he knew this was THE LORD’S battle and through his faithful service, God would give the victory for God’s people.

And so I ponder in my own life: Am I willing to engage in the seemingly routine works of ministry realizing that they may provide the opportunity to receive a greater calling to put my faith into action for the benefit of all God’s people?

Likewise you are invited to consider how using your abilities to serve others, often unnoticed by many, may open up the possibility for you to touch lives with God’s love and grace in ways you never imagined.

May you be blessed in the discovery!
