Letting Go

28 Aug

“As long as that son of Jesse is alive you will never be king.” – 1 Samuel 20:31

These are King Saul’s words to his son Jonathan. Scripture has already told us that Saul has lost favor with the Lord. And yet, he is not only trying to hang on to power for himself but to transfer it to his son. This truth becomes evident when David is “missing” from dinner. Saul has already taken out his anger on David and now he has launched a javelin at his own son.

Jonathan is not only aware of David’s popularity but also his success. Although not overtly stated, Jonathan can see the Lord at work in David’s life as a leader and defender of the people.

Saul wants to keep the kingdom in his family but the Lord already has another plan in place.

This episode causes me to ponder:

  • “What am I trying to hold onto which the Lord has already determined will not happen?”
  • “What changes in thought or action must I take inorder to live and minister within God’s will (and plan)?”

Lord, clear my mind and my agenda of everything that I desire. I want to open my heart and my calendar to anything you desire for my life. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
