Filled with the Holy Spirit

(Sermon outline for Pentecost)

Scripture References: Genesis 11:1-9 & Acts 2:1-13

Key Thought: Human will divides … God’s Spirit unites !!

In both episodes the people gathered

– In Genesis to accomplish their own will … we find SIN in vs. 4 “to make a name for themselves”

– In Acts the Spirit drew them together in unity … “they heard them in their own language”

– Let us be drawn together by the spirit rather than coming together to satisfy our human desires

The difference between Babel & Pentecost is the presence of the Holy Spirit

– when we try to do things on our own we run into obstacles

– when we are guided by the Spirit, ministry is fruitful

“How could we expect a blessing if we were too idle to ask for it? How could we look for a Pentecost if we never met with one accord, in one place, to wait upon the Lord?”  – Charles Spurgeon

  • Human nature causes us to seek what’s best for me … when the community is gathered in the Spirit of God we are guided to serve one another.

“The early church had none of the things that we think are so essential for success today—buildings, money, political influence, social status—and yet the church won multitudes to Christ and saw many churches established throughout the Roman world.” – Vance Havner
