When Provision Turns Into Bondage

When Provision Turns Into Bondage

Egypt was never meant to be home.

It started as a gift. A refuge. A place of provision. When famine struck the land of Israel, Egypt became the place where God sustained His people through Joseph’s wisdom and leadership. What once felt like salvation, however, slowly became something else entirely.

Scripture tells us, “There arose a king who knew not Joseph.” That single line signals a turning point. What was once a place of safety became a place of suffering. The place of provision became the place of bondage.

God saw the suffering of His people. He heard their cries. And long before they understood what was happening, God was already at work—placing a baby in a basket, positioning him in Pharaoh’s household, calling him years later from a burning bush.

When God called Moses, Moses responded the way many of us would: Who am I? God’s answer was not a résumé. It was a promise: “I will be with you.”

Leaving Egypt meant stepping into uncertainty. The wilderness wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. God provided manna, quail, water from the rock, and guidance through fire and cloud. The wilderness became the new place of provision.

The tragedy is that what should have been an 18-month journey turned into 40 years—because comfort replaced trust.

This story isn’t just about Israel. It’s about us. Sometimes God calls us out of places that feel familiar but are no longer healthy. Growth often requires movement. And obedience always requires trust.

When God leads us away from our comfort zones, it’s never to abandon us. It’s to provide for us in deeper, truer ways.
